a laboratory ball mill is a type of grinder that is used to grind (or mix) materials such as ores, chemicals, ceramic raw materials, and paints. Laboratory ball mills revolve around a horizontal axis and are partially filled with the material to be ground as well as the grinding medium. As media, various materials such as ceramic balls, flint pebbles, and stainless steel balls are used. The material is reduced to a fine powder by an internal cascading effect. Continuous operation of industrial ball mills is possible, with feed at one end and discharge at the other. Large to medium-sized ball mills are mechanically rotated on their axes, but small ones are typically made up of a cylindrical capped container supported by two drive shafts (pulleys and belts are used to transmit rotary motion)..
